I’m focusing on the idea of ‘New Beginnings’ this month across the blog. If you’re going to embark on a new beginning, it’s usually a good idea to start with a blank slate, and using some simple ingredients in ritual practice can certainly help you feel like you’ve wiped it clean.
This week, I’d like to share some common ingredients that can be used in purification rituals. There are plenty of different ways to use these ingredients, some of which I’ve outlined in this post.
I’ve tried to centre this on ingredients that you’ll commonly find in your average spice rack or grocery shop, so it’s suitable for beginner witches who may not want to spend too much money getting a lot of supplies.
- Bay leaf: Believed to keep negativity at bay and attract positive energy.
- Cloves: Commonly used in incenses for cleansing, and dispelling negativity.
- Garlic: Often used in healing recipes, garlic is also believed to clear unwanted energy from your space.
- Lemon: This tangy citrus fruit can aid in ceremonies designed to remove spiritual blockages and to purify.
- Peppermint: Typically used to complement healing and purification rituals, peppermint is also used to ward off sickness.
- Rosemary: Another herb used for good health, rosemary is often utilised as an incense designed to remove negativity from your life.
- Sage: Commonly used in smoke cleansing, sage is said to remove negativity energy, and promote health and wellbeing.
- Sea salt: Often utilised as a representative of the Earth element, versatile sea salt can be combined with other ingredients to banish evil intent.
- Star anise: A common ingredient in ceremonies that dispel negative energy and ritual cleansing. Said to protect against curses.
- Thyme: This kitchen favourite is often used in charms to assist with restful sleep, to purify spaces, and banish distressing energy.
If you’re feeling inspired to develop your own purification rituals, these ingredients are a fantastic place to start. But if you’re short on time, or need some extra guidance, my Purify range on Etsy offers ready-made options tailored for all sorts of rituals.
