My theme for January has primarily been exploring New Beginnings – either explicitly or implicitly. There are a number of different ways you can explore the symbolism of new beginnings, be it through herbs and spices, journaling, or creative pursuits.
For this week’s witchcraft post, I thought it might be useful to focus on crystals that are associated with new beginnings and the symbolism surrounding them. I’d like to note that new beginnings can manifest in lots of different ways, but I’m going to explore primarily from a place of cleansing and protecting in preparation, and establishing the confidence to move forward.
Black Tourmaline: A Stone of Protection

Renowned for its protective properties, black tourmaline can assist in shielding against negative energy. It offers up a sense of grounding and feeling secure.
Applying this to new beginnings: Clear away emotional blockages, protect yourself as you face new challenges.
Carnelian: A Stone of Courage and Creativity
A beautifully vibrant crystal, often utilised for its association with courage, motivation, and creative pursuits. It is often used to stimulate personal power and passion.
Applying this to new beginnings: Give yourself the inner power and motivation to take new steps and embark on bold adventures; use creativity to find new opportunities.

Clear Quartz: A Crystal for Restoring Balance & Supporting Manifestation

A versatile crystal that is also known as the “master healer”, quartz is known for cleansing, protection, and amplifying the uses of other crystals. It is often used in manifestation, healing, and growth rituals and practice.
Applying this to new beginnings: Use clear quartz to clear away negative thoughts when trying something new, and to get in touch with your higher self.
Green Aventurine: A Stone of Optimism and Encouragement
A gorgeous green gemstone, green aventurine is typically used in prosperity and abundance rituals. It supports optimistic outlooks, and pushes you to take necessary steps for success.
Applying this to new beginnings: Embrace new opportunities with optimism; prepare yourself for positive changes and the work this entails.

Moonstone: An Intuitive and Transformative Gemstone

Symbolising light, hope, and the divine feminine, moonstone is the stone of new beginnings. Associated with femininity, balance, and embracing intuition, moonstone can be readily used to support transformation.
Applying this to new beginnings: Getting in touch with your intuition, balancing your energy and focus.
How to Use Crystals
Although I’m a firm believer that there’s not really a right or wrong way to practice witchcraft – that it should be intuitive – I recognise that it’s helpful for some to have a few general pointers. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but rather a reflection of how I use them:
Wear crystals as jewellery
Consider the symbolism of different body parts and wear jewellery. I typically wear wire-wrapped crystals as necklaces, as I’ve been focusing mostly on healing and journey from within recently, so that makes me think of my heart.
Carry crystals with you
Sometimes I find it helpful to pop a crystal into my pocket. I can reach for it as I repeat my ideas and manifestations if I need a reminder of something.
Decorate your home (or workspace!)
Crystals and rocks are some of my favourite items of home décor. I have various rocks all over my house, in my plant pots, on my bedside table, on my version of an altar. I love looking at them in an aesthetic sense, as well as using them as a focus for meditation.
Make spell jars
Spell jars are a stalwart of witchcraft. Some may refer to them as intention jars. Essentially, you place your ingredients (including crystals and herbs) in a jar – with intention, of course! You then seal the jar with a corresponding wax colour. You can adorn your altar, carry spell jars in your pocket, or create jewellery from them. If you’re interested in lovingly pre-made spell jars to support your crystal work, I have a range of minis available over on Etsy.

Infuse in your rituals

This is one to exercise some caution with, depending on the rituals you’re doing. I use anointing oils a lot that I infuse with crystals and herbs to amplify my intentions. I even share some of these on Etsy! Some people add crystals to their water bottles, candles, and simmer pots. However, you need to carefully consider the safety of doing this, and it’s not something I recommend. The internet is awash with fake crystals, which could cause them to explode when exposed to excessive heat if they aren’t quite what you think they are; some crystals may contain traces of potentially harmful substances that could leach into your water.
I’d love to hear more about how you utilise crystals in your meditative, wellness, and witchcraft practices. Let me know in the comments!
