As Christmas draws near, we’re surrounded by excess—more food, more gifts, and more waste. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Here are five easy ways to reduce waste this festive season while keeping things sustainable.

1. Get Creative with Leftovers

Food waste is a big issue at Christmas. It’s a point of conversation in my family’s house – the shops close for one day, and everyone rushes to buy enough food to last three weeks. We tend to live off Christmas leftovers for several days, but it can sometimes become stagnant.

To avoid it, try repurposing leftovers into new meals—soups, curries, pasta sauces, or even sandwiches. And if you’ve got leftover Christmas cheese, it’s perfect for pastas and pastries!

2. Opt for Eco-Friendly Wrapping

In the UK alone, enough wrapping paper is thrown away each year to stretch to the moon! Instead of buying new paper, reuse what you’ve got, or use it for creative projects like collages and gift tags. Consider recycled wrapping paper, too.

3. Regift Thoughtfully

Whilst our inherent reaction to regifting may be negative, published research suggests that attitudes are less negative than we might initially believe.

Regifting doesn’t have to be taboo. If you’ve received something that’s not your style, pass it on to someone who will appreciate it. Just be sure to avoid giving it back to the original giver!

4. Repurpose Packaging

That packaging you’re about to toss? Think again. Tins, jars, and cardboard boxes can be reused for storage, crafts, or as wrapping for smaller gifts. Get creative and find a new life for everyday items.

5. Upcycle Old Gifts

Sometimes, the gifts we receive aren’t quite what we need. Whilst we’ve already discussed regifting, they can also be an opportunity to get creative. Instead of letting them gather dust, upcycle them! Paint old figurines, repurpose clothes, or transform furniture into something fresh. It’s a fun way to reduce waste and create something unique.
